Tobradex Eye Drops is a combination of a topical corticosteroid and an antibiotic. The presence of each of them potentiates the effect of the other leading to combined anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial therapeutic effects. How should I use Tobradex Eye Drops ?

You should instill one drop in the eye to be operated on every 4 hours while the patient is awake for three days before undergoing the surgery, and every 2 hours while the patient is awake for 2 days after surgery then 4 times per day for a period of a week then 1 drop is instilled per day for 10 days. This is the standard regimen but always you should follow your doctor instructions about the dose and frequency of it.

1.What are the forms of Tobradex Eye Drops ?
Suspension : It is isotonic aqueous solution in which each mL of it contains 0.1% dexamethasone and 3 mg of Tobramycin.
Ointment : Each gram of it contains 0.1% dexamethasone and 3 mg of Tobramycin.

2.What is the composition of Tobradex Eye Drops?
Active Ingredients : Tobramycin and dexamethasone.
Inactive Ingredients : Suspension: Edetate disodium, hydroxyethyl cellulose, sodium chloride, sodium sulfate, sodium hydroxide, sulfuric acid (to adjust pH), tyloxapol and water for injection. Ointment - petrolatum base and mineral oil.
Preservatives : Suspension - benzalkonium chloride 0.01%, Ointment - chlorobutanol 0.5%.

3.How Does it work ?
Dexamethasone : A powerful topical steroid that reaches high concentrations in the aqueous humor allowing it to produce a strong anti-inflammatory effect in the lids and anterior segment of the eye.

4.What are the indications of Tobradex Eye Drops ?
Reduce intraocular inflammation which occurs after ocular surgery such as cataract surgery, uveitis and ocular trauma.
Can be used after refractive surgery in order to reduce inflammation.
Can be used in patients with allergic conjunctivitis.
Can be used to reduce redness and swelling in patients with corneal infection but only under caution.
Can be used in patients who had chemical eye injuries but also under caution.
Can be used in patients with Hyphema in order to reduce the risk of rebleeding episode.

5.What are the side effects of Tobradex Eye Drops?
The most common side effects of tobramycin are:
Hypersensitivity reaction to the product.
Localized toxicity resulting in itching and swelling of the eye lid and erythema of the conjunctiva.
Prolonged use may develop resistant microorganisms leading to persistent fungal eye infection.
6.While the most common side effects of steroids are:
Increased eye pressure leading to steroid induced glaucoma.
Delayed healing of tissues and wounds.
Development of cataract especially posterior subcapsular cataract
8.What are the sizes of the bottle ?
The bottle contains 2.5 mL, 5 mL and 10 mL of Tobradex sterile ophthalmic solution.
